{"id":83,"date":"2020-05-09T03:47:32","date_gmt":"2020-05-09T03:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gwgs.southerndays.info\/?page_id=83"},"modified":"2020-06-24T19:16:10","modified_gmt":"2020-06-25T00:16:10","slug":"codonanthe","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/gwgs.southerndays.info\/?page_id=83","title":{"rendered":"Codonanthe"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-page\" data-elementor-id=\"83\" class=\"elementor elementor-83\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-49ee1ef3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"49ee1ef3\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"aux-parallax-section elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-68a1b53f\" data-id=\"68a1b53f\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66362e63 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66362e63\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>The genus Codonanthe (co- doe- NAN- thee)&nbsp; was chosen by Martius in 1829 to refer to the subcampanulate (almost bell shaped) corolla in some of the species.&nbsp; Several species are in cultivation where they tolerate the less moist and warm conditions than are available in their native low altitude forests.&nbsp; Codonanthe is a genus of about 15 species that occurs from Mexico to Brazil and from the Lesser Antilles to Peru and Bolivia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Codonanthe are found growing epiphytically in ant nests.&nbsp; A symbiosis exists between the Codonanthe and the ants in the tropics.&nbsp; The extrafloral necatries on the lower surfaces, in the axils of the leaves, and at the base of the sepals produce sugars that attract the ants.&nbsp; The ants cross-pollinate the Codonanthe.&nbsp; The seeds are enclosed in an aril.&nbsp; The aril is a fleshy tube arising from the seed stem (funicle).&nbsp; The arils are brightly colored and are taken by the ants as food and deposited in the anthill where they germinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Codonanthe are branching and trailing plants which spread into colonies by means of roots from the leaf axils.&nbsp; Codonanthe do well in hanging baskets.&nbsp; They can be propagated by tip cuttings massed in a hanging basket or azalea pot.&nbsp; Most flowers are white and tubular in form, with short flaring lobes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Codonanthe do best in soilless mix consisting of one part peat moss to one part vermiculite and one part perlite.&nbsp; Water plants with one quarter strength of a granular fertilizer.
